McCluskey, Virginia

McCluskey, Virginia Frances
April 18, 1949 - June 1, 2024

Virginia McCluskey (née Smith) died peacefully in hospital the morning of June 1st, having been surrounded by the love of her family in her final weeks. She had recently received a stem cell transplant, and though she fought valiantly for a strong recovery, post-transplant complications ultimately proved too much to overcome. Her family is celebrating her life, while grieving her life cut short.

Ginny, as she was known to friends and family, was born and raised in Hamilton, ON, alongside her two older sisters (Barbara Mihowich and Victoria Dennis). She met her husband Robert (Bob) McCluskey in the eighth grade and they married while Ginny was obtaining a Bachelor of Math from the University of Waterloo; a degree she would put to good use pursuing a successful career in computer systems.

Ginny led a full and active life. She picked up running in her 40s and qualified for the Boston Marathon on her first attempt - an impressive feat! The family cottage also provided a scenic backdrop for regular swims, golf games, bike rides, and hikes (often to the local marina for an ice cream cone to satisfy a sweet tooth). An avid traveller in recent years, Ginny and Bob made memories visiting over 40 countries upon their retirement. Her family and lifelong friends will remember her fierce intelligence and generous spirit, regularly hosting visits up north, holiday celebrations, and participating in bridge and book clubs to maintain close ties with those she loved. Selfless is an apt description for a woman who consistently put the needs of others above her own.

Ginny is survived by her husband Bob, her three children David (Nina), Meaghan (Christine), and Richard, her six grandchildren, and her two sisters. Ginny and Bob celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in August 2021 and their enduring love and commitment to their vows have been beautifully demonstrated over the last eighteen months.

Ginny’s family extends its appreciation to the team at Juravinski Hospital, which has provided excellent care. In lieu of flowers or other contributions, the family asks that donations be made to the Juravinski Hospital or the Juravinski Cancer Centre Foundation.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
