We are thankful for the last five years that David shared with Alicia, the love of his life: “David and I got to share so many amazing times together. We loved to go hiking, taking our dog, Sylus, for walks and runs through the forest. We went on picnics, canoeing and loved going for brunch on Sundays. Sunday was our special day together. We listened to music and went on long drives and just laughed together often. We did everything together; he is my best friend and my soulmate.” -- Alicia
As a child, David had a playful spirit and a great sense of humour. He had strong athletic abilities and could climb anything. He had a tender heart towards animals and loved to go hiking with his dad. His best friend was his dog, Chevy, who could obey amazing commands. As he approached his teen years David had been introduced to drugs and alcohol which started him down a dangerous path. David was a kind and loving person and would help anyone he could even in those dark years. About five years ago, he met Alicia who was struggling herself. Together they helped each other towards recovery and formed a deep and abiding love.
David’s last year was strong with a time at Teen Challenge and then living and working in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia where Alicia, the love of his life was also living and working. With Alicia, David was home visiting with his parents and his brothers and sister during the last week of his life. Sadly, during his visit home, he had slipped a little and met with someone from his drug past who provided him with a dose that was too much for his system -- one bad choice that took his life. He did not expect it and neither did we. He was on his way to shower and collapsed. He did not respond to CPR or to the NARCAN. Our thanks to the Elmira Fire Department and the Paramedics and the Emergency staff at Grand River Hospital who did their best to resuscitate him. And so we grieve, but not as those who have no hope. Our God is real and David’s faith in God is real. Now he is in the presence of his Saviour, Jesus Christ, and, free at last from the destructive power of substance abuse. His life journey continues on the other side, and in the words of that powerful old spiritual, ‘Free at last! Lord God Almighty. Free at last!’And one day we, too, shall join him in that Great Reunion! And we, too, will be Free at last! Know the blessing of the God, in Whom we live and move and have our being:
‘The LORD bless you and keep you. The LORD make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you. The LORD turn His face toward you and give you peace. Amen.’

This is a special grace that we have been given – each other. John Donne said it true: “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main;… any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind. And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”
