O’Brien, Pat
O’Brien James Patrick George
April 18, 1936 - July 11, 2024It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Patrick George (Pat) O’Brien on July 11, 2024, at the age of 88, at Hospice Wellington.
Pat was a loving husband of 67 years to Jean (2023), a loving father to daughter Donna (1982), son David, and daughter-in-law Christine (2022). He was also a proud and loving grandfather to grandchildren Ashleigh (Matthew), Matthew (Cassandra) and Kyle. Pat was so excited to meet and spend time with his great-grandchildren Hayden and Lennon.
Pat was born in Birmingham, England, where he met his bride to be. They wed in December 1956 and a few short weeks later they boarded a steamer headed for Canada with nothing more than a few hundred dollars and a trunk with all of their possessions. They had no place to live and no jobs - only the hope for an adventure in a new world. After trying a few locations, they decided to settle in Guelph and lived there for the remainder of their lives.
Pat was a tool maker by trade and spent 30+ years at OMark Industries - now known as Oregon Tool (Blount). After retirement, Pat did volunteer work with the breakfast club at St. James church and spent countless hours looking after and entertaining his grandchildren.
Pat and Jean travelled a lot and were always up for a new adventure, especially when it involved bird watching (one of Pat’s favourite hobbies).
Pat will be sadly missed by all who had the pleasure to have known him.
Special thanks to the nurses and support staff at Guelph General Hospital, 4th floor East.
A small family service will be held at a later date.
